How to start using OER and AER

Understand the Benefits

Using OER/AER can provide students with free or low-cost access to course materials, helping to improve affordability and access to education. OER/AER also allow instructors to customize and adapt materials to better fit their course needs.

Explore Repositories

There are many repositories that host a variety of OER/AER, such as OER Commons, OpenStax, and institutional/state-level repositories. Instructors can browse these to find high-quality, relevant resources for their courses.

Consider Licensing and Accessibility

When adopting OER/AER, it's important to understand the licensing, which allows for reuse, revision, remixing and redistribution. Ensuring OER/AER are accessible to all students is also crucial.

Start Small

Instructors can start by replacing just one or two course materials with OER/AER, then expand from there as they become more comfortable. Integrating interactive OER/AER activities can also enhance the learning experience.
