Health Education Center: Ethical Standards

Health Education Center Orientation

Please view the simulation ethical standards video explained by Kris Voigt, RN, Karen Sohn, RN and Jenna Curtis, RN.

Ethics in Simulation: Please read Ethics in Simulation and complete the assessment below.

Pre-brief:

The pre-brief prepares the learner for the simulation experience.

Included in the pre-brief are:

  • The learning objectives for the simulation
    • creating a pre-brief mind map
  • A hands-on tour
  • Introduction of the simulation environment and equipment
  • Timeframe as an observer and actual simulation participant
  • Introduction to mannequin or standardized patient
  • Walk-through the control room if utilized

During the pre-brief, the facilitator creates a safe environment to learn, and the learner can prepare for the simulation by understanding what to expect.

De-brief:

After the simulation is completed, the facilitator leads the entire group in reviewing what happened in the scenario.

  • First, the students are allowed to do a “brain dump” on a piece of paper. Best practice shows that the learners need to have time to release their emotions.
  • Utilizing a different whiteboard,  the facilitator will have the group “make the patient a real person” by describing the patient’s medical and social history leading up to the scenario.
  • Then the facilitator guides the learners through what exactly happened and in which order during the scenario, including the assessment, communication, provider orders of medications/treatments, and patient response to the interventions.
  • The pre-brief mind map is then compared with the debrief whiteboard outline. The learners consider what they would do differently or continue to incorporate into their practice.
