Microsoft Teams

Basic Things to Know About "Chat" in Microsoft Teams

Chat is at the center of whatever you do in Teams, similar to Instant Messenger (IM) from Skype.

Chats can be one-on-one or in a group:

You start one-on-one and group chats the same way, by selecting New chatnew chat icon at the top of Teams. Then type in the name(s) of the person you want to start a chat with in the To field. Once in a chat, you'll be able to send messages that include attached files, links, emojis, stickers, and GIFs.

Chat with yourself:

If you want to draft a message, send files from one device to another, or get to know features a little better, you can start a chat with yourself. Follow the steps above to start a new chat, but this time type in your own name. You can do everything you would in a regular chat. You will see it pinned to the top of your chat list by default.

See all your formatting options:

There are many formatting options for messages. To open your formatting, select Format beneath the text box where you type your message. In this view you can select the text you want to format, then choose options like B, I, U to bold, italicize, or underline the text. You can also highlight, change the font size and color, make lists, and more.

There are a few ways to search for and find messages:

Depending on what you remember about the sender of the message or the characteristics of the message, choose how to search for your message.

Find a chat based on the sender's name

Type the sender's name in the Command (search) box at the top of the app.  You'll see their name and any group chats listed.  Select their name to go to your one-on-one chat with them or a group chat to resume that one.
